When it rains, I feel the weather gets romantic. I know it is a cliche, but I love the feeling of anticipation, new beginnings that rain brings. Many of our hindi movies have a romance blooming in the rains and Yash Chopra movies are masters at it. Think the ‘Pyar kar liya toh kya’ song in the rain, even ‘Kabhi Kabhie’ has snow falling, songs in Chandni in the rain saying ‘Lagi aaj saawan ki phir woh ghadi hai’. And another song which shows Kareena dancing in the rain. Kareena has a whole lot of movies in which she is finding love by dancing in the rain like Jab We Met, Chameli, Asoka and more. But, when I saw this prompt, all I could think of was writing a love story set in the rain. Here’s a start of a love story set in the background of rain. Hope you enjoy it and let me know your love story in the rain.

—————————————

Varsha hated the rains and especially if she had to ride on her scooter.  The sleets of rain on her face felt like needles.  But,  one needs to go to work and therefore to commute.  As she was rushing to cross the traffic signal,  it turned red.  With a sigh, she turned off the scooter engine and looked at the signal which was counting down from 180.

Looking around Varsha stared in wonder as she saw a guy cycling towards her, breaking the signal.  He was dressed to the nines in office wear with a helmet and sneakers.  What’s more,  the helmet was pink.  She stared and it looked like he was moving in slow motion, towards her.  He was saying something,  but she couldn’t hear.  Was he speaking to her?  He was gesturing wildly with one of his hands.  It all looked a bit silly.  She looked away as she felt a laugh creep up on her throat.

Bang.  She felt a jolt and there it was.  The bicycle and the man had hit her scooter and were now sprawled on the floor.  Stunned, the man got up and started shouting at her.

‘I told you to move away, foo..ool.  Didn’t you hear me?  What were you looking at?’

Varsha gathered her wits and retorted, ‘whoa..hold on? What happened? Why are you screaming at me?’

The man ignored her to pick up the bicycle, looking for damages.  He didn’t bother that one side of his formal shirt was muddied.  She couldn’t hold back her laughter any longer and burst out laughing.

This angered the guy more.  ‘What makes you laugh? My plight?  I have to get to office for a meeting.’

‘Coffee?’ she asked.

The man now stared at her, registering the sequence of events, and felt a bit foolish.

‘Sorry,’ he said, ‘I need the coffee.’

And thus started another love story…

Rain always enchants everyone, especially the first rain in the summer is very romantic as it suddenly changes the appearance of nature- light drizzling against the sun rays – very very scenic. Enjoyed the story !

I believe there can be much more to this story. Why was that man, dressed up for work, riding a cycle wearing a pink helmet coming at the woman from the opposite side? Why couldn’t he apply brakes on his cycle? I think you must surely expand on this one.

Oops! Looks like the guy was in a super hurry to get to his meeting and look what that hurry cost him! At least the girl was gracious enough to offer a coffee to save him from the whole embarrassment. Would love to know what unfolds during the coffee session, Lata. Do write the series. 🙂

Sweet?? After that uncalled for dressing down, he owes her coffee. And a sincere apology! (I do like the image of a well-dressed businessman on a bicycle, in the rain, wearing a PINK helmet. But if I were our heroine, he’d have to work super hard to get a date out of that scene, and I might still be laughing at his plight.

Thanks Holly. That’s right. The image of the guy with the pink helmet is all against what we normally see. And the girl loved the humor in it. Probably, she wanted to know what was he doing.

Most of the love stories happen when it rains, thanks to our Bollywood, I guess. They seldom show the potholed roads and the muck and the flooded streets in those love stories, else we would have kept our heads firmly on our shoulders and refrained from falling..in love! 😛

A potholed road is perfect to engineer a fall into the arms of someone you have a crush on.. The rains are just giving me romantic ideas.
