Minal touched the green sari wistfully as her employer Sheila showed it to her. She wished she could own it but she knew it was much beyond her meagre wages. She hoped that someday it will be hers once Sheila got tired of wearing it.
At home that evening, Minal silently washed the mound of dishes left by her husband during the day. It was a never ending job unlike those ads they show on TV, where the women wore crisp saris and finished their dishes in a jiffy. It was a blatant lie.
‘You are very quiet today Minal. All ok at work?’ enquired her husband taking his eyes off the TV for an instant.
‘I am Ok. I was wondering what shall I wear at your sister’s housewarming?’
As expected, there was no more response from her husband. Life was good for him ever since his factory shut down. Happy drinking.
The next day, Minal was surprised to see the green sari for washing. When she got the sari for ironing, she put in the tiniest tear at two or three places in the sari. Nothing a ‘rafoo’ couldn’t fix. ‘Soon’, she thought as she hummed to herself.
