Minal touched the green sari wistfully as her employer Sheila showed it to her.  She wished she could own it but she knew it was much beyond her meagre wages.  She hoped that someday it will be hers once Sheila got tired of wearing it.

At home that evening,  Minal silently washed the mound of dishes left by her husband during the day.  It was a never ending job unlike those ads they show on TV,  where the women wore crisp saris and finished their dishes in a jiffy.  It was a blatant lie.

‘You are very quiet today Minal.  All ok at work?’ enquired her husband taking his eyes off the TV for an instant.

‘I am Ok.  I was wondering what shall I wear at your sister’s housewarming?’

As expected, there was no more response from her husband.  Life was good for him ever since his factory shut down.  Happy drinking.

The next day, Minal was surprised to see the green sari for washing.  When she got the sari for ironing, she put in the tiniest tear at two or three places in the sari.  Nothing a ‘rafoo’ couldn’t fix.  ‘Soon’, she thought as she hummed to herself.

Have you ever read Guy de Maupassant’s “The Necklace”? Your story reminds me of that one. I can’t help but wonder if Minal will pull it off, or meet her comeuppance?

Thanks Holly. I have not read Guy de Maupassant. But I will check it out.

Google it. It’s a short story and old enough to be freely available online. It’s one of my favorites.

I liked how you portrayed Minal as a “human”. A human who lives a sad life but secretly fulfils her desires even when it means bringing out the not-so-human side to the surface.

Is this what they do to get what they want. How sad that there is so much inequality between people.

Depths of desire are fathomless and shameless too. Felt sad for Minal yet was agonized by her deeds.
You painted the society’s divide effortlessly Lata.

Ohh she didn’t! I wonder if this happens in reality as well? Loved the twist in the end. Didn’t expect that 😊

I made it up, but I think it could be happening in reality too 🙂 Thanks Rajlakshmi.

This story tugged at my heart, even though what Minal did was wrong. But it is difficult to fathom the degree of desire for something when one has it all, right.
Loved your take on the prompt, Lata!
