Browsing through my Facebook posts, I read about someone who bought 10 books in a sale for under Rs. 500. I checked out the books. All classics. I must have this one. I immediately logged on to the sale website. Tried long forgotten user ids and passwords till a combination got me through. It was just a few clicks and I got 8 in Rs. 500. Whew! The feeling was exhilarating. The delivery dates were longer due to the sale. I waited impatiently. On every door bell, I hoped to see the classics. There were a few misses before I finally got my hand on 4 of them first and the others came in rapid succession.

So far, so good. Now, to get these to assimilate with my existing books was another challenge. You see, the hubby has grounded me on the purchase of any new books till I complete reading the existing ones. He has his reasons. We transported atleast 4 cartons of books as we shifted residences of which 2 must be my TBR. And to find space for them in the new house was tough. We had decided to build a good bookshelf and put the books up for display. But, considering the non reading family I have, I vetoed it out. It was my private collection, books I had loved, cried with. I didn’t want to defend them in front of people who said, ‘So many books! Did you read them?’ ‘How much money you spend on them?’ ‘What do you do after you read them?’ I shook my head imagining their weird questions. I wanted to scream ‘Tum nahi samjhoge‘. They will never understand.

Coming back to the books. I did the best thing. Put it in the upfront shelf. Hiding something is never better than when you do it in plain sight.

And there they are lying, waiting for their turn patiently. I can watch TV and also look at books and smile in anticipation. But, you see I just discovered reading Malayalam and completed reading my first book called ‘Randamoozham‘ which is a cult classic for Malayalam readers. I have also borrowed the next set of books to read in Malayalam from the same author called ‘Naalukettu‘. I want to start on that one, but I am first reading the book I had promised to read to a friend of mine called ‘Satyameva Jayate‘. After this, I will be reading and reviewing my own books this year. I plan to read a lot of classics this year. To help me read diverse books, I will also follow the Write Tribe Reading Challenge for 2019. And there, just opposite to where I am sitting, the books are waiting for me to pick them.

Have you started reading in the new year? What are you reading? Any recommendations?

Ah, you know, that’s kinda my story of life. I hoard books and I am sure there are at least 75-100 brand new unread books on my TBR. I am on a book ban, except maybe buy that one book a month 😛 Good luck with the reading challenge 🙂

As you have read my post, you know my reading goals for the year. But I have to say, like you, reading the backlist books I own are a huge priority among all my goals.

I have tried book buying bans in the past, and I have even been kinda successful at them. Though the accumulation continues as I keep getting (and asking) for books as gifts. And this is not to mention the review copies. Sigh.

Let’s hope both of us are able to make at-least a small dent in our respective TBRs this year.

I have recently started reading on my Kindle, so my bookshelf doesn’t have too many books, but I intend to do that on my Kindle. Load it with so many books, I won’t fall short for any in 2019….at least! 😛 Don’t know how many I will actually end up reading…:P

Glad to see your space active again, Lata. I see you are back with WordPress.com.
Why do you have to defend your book collection to others? Are you taking money from them in the pretense for something else and buying book? No I suppose! Then why? It’s your home, your books, your love. You should display them however you want. I don’t have a bookshelf, I would love one someday. But in this small apartment it is difficult . I do have a bookshelf set up for my kids in their room, though. Plus, I don’t like to buy a lot of books before reading the ones I have already. And I do visit the public library to borrow books. So I’m okay so far.
    Happy new year!

I have 3 full bookshelves at the moment and need to reorganise them so I know which ones are my TBR. I have been culling books that don’t mean much to me and handing them to second-hand book stores or through books on the rail. Enjoy 2019 reading!

Sounds very familiar. If I move, I’ll have about 20 cartons of books. At least 8 would be the husband’s so I feel safe. This year I’m determined to read at least 50 books. Let’s see if I can get there.

New year had begun with few books, got as gifts.. One is on love & life, another that I finished was a debut novel called Broken bangles and have one on food across India…

I can relate to you. I had to part with one carton of books when I shifted to my new home. Last year I was on a self-imposed no book buying pact, nevertheless, I ended up buying quite a few. I am possessive about my books and my TBR is longer than my bookshelf can accommodate. I am not yet into Kindle, let’s see, with an ultimatum from better half I may eventually shift to Kindle. In my home also all are non-readers, so whenever books get piled up, all blame me. This year I hope to read more books than the previous year. let’s see.

OMG! One Carton.. I would cry for days for that. I can imagine your situation. I have the Kindle too and read on it. But, I love books more.

Yes, I did cry a lot.. I do not have a Kindle. I love the look, touch, smell of books..do not know how I would manage a Kindle..but now I feel it is becoming inevitable as there is hardly any space left😭

Lovely to see you back to writing, Lata. This year, I’ve actually written down the books I want to read. I moved to ebooks as we have outgrown our book shelves in Mumbai (books have still not moved to Hyderabad) and I’ve inherited a whole lot more from my parents! But I’ve slowly started buying hard copies again. Irresistible, are’t they?

So good to read you Lata after a long time. How have you been?
I hear you! Since I got a Kindle, I have been good not taking up any shelf space at home. One I don’t have space and two, no one will understand 😛

    Happy New Year, Lata! ❤

I hear you Lata. I need to impose a book-byuing ban too. My cupboard is bulging and I’m slowly beginning to encroach on the Husband’s side. There are books in the living room, in the bedroom and even in the kids’ room. It’s getting a bit crazy. That’s going to be my resolution this year.

I want to give away the books but, I cannot really sell it to the raddi guys. I would love them to find homes. I gave away some last year. Need to focus on the same this year.

I can imagine your dilemma. I have bought so many books and have a few more on Kindle but haven’t gotten around to reading them. I have just started Room in January. Am planning to read 2 books per month. Have two bookshelves at home which are bulging now. Thinking of restarting my library membership.

I am also planning atleast 2 per month. I do not have a good library in my vicinity. There was one but it closed down due to lack of membership. I see bookelphia is a good one as an online library.

Wow thats an impressive buy Lata and I am dying of envy at the moment. But I hear you on the books to cart when moving houses. I have about 10 cartons of just books and probably 3 out of that are unread ones! I impose a no book buying pact on myself every year but……………………Be glad you have someone to do that for you.
The besharam that I am, I have already made a list of books to be asked from friends and relatives for Bday 😉
Happy reading in 2019 and wish you a very joyous year!!
P.S. – Love your website. Have you re-done it? Its soooooo pretty!!!

Thank you Shalz. I do that besharami too for books.

I moved from self hosted to wordpress free hosting as I felt, I was spending lot of time in maintenance. This way, I can just pick a theme and start writing. Some freedom is curbed, but I can live with it.

My TBR list is growing as well, but I do sneak in a book or too before the husband finds out 😅 It’s the same thing in my house as well. I got so many in my phone too. I think it’s a trait of all the book lovers. They are so irresistible.
Hopefully you will get through your list this year. Wish you a very happy new year 😊

I can totally empathise with the idea of a bulging TBR 😉 My current goal is to not buy any more books (kindle or otherwise) until I complete at least 25 of the books on my list. Let’s see how long that resolve lasts.

As for the bookshelf, sigh. The story is somewhat similar here. The only difference is all 3 of us at home are voracious readers and the problem now is to find a whole room dedicated to books because THAT’s how many books we’ve managed to collect. 😀

I will check your GoodReads list and share some recommendations. Have a great 2019 filled with reading 🙂

I would really love to dedicate a whole room to reading. I just don’t want people commenting on it. I know I shouldn’t care but it does.

How can one stop buying books? Only a non reader can think of this blasphemy!:))) I have become smarter, I try to buy Kindle copies. No one ever finds out my guilty pleasure!:))
I must thank you for introducing me to Perumal Murugan, Lata. I have become a big fan and have read my way through almost all his books.

Glad that you enjoyed reading Perumal Murugan. I have to catch up on Poonachi. Excellent writer. Sadly, we would have never known about him if of his book wasn’t banned.
