Ours was an arranged marriage after a short engagement period of about 6 weeks. In an era of no cellphones, Facebook, Whatsapp, our communication was limited to a daily single phone call monitored by the parents. Before, getting married, we met precisely two times. My friends were aghast that I was marrying a complete stranger and going into this with my eyes closed. But, my inner self told me I was right.
Post one week of the wedding, not much accustomed to each other, we went on our honeymoon to the Queen of Hills, Ooty. . We did all the popular things, visited famous landmarks and took lots of photographs on our Minolta camera. Slowly, we started discovering new aspects of each other and life was beautiful.
Once back home, we got all our photos printed. In those days, we had to wait for a few days till the roll was developed to see how we did in the picture. There was this one grainy picture of me alone smiling at the camera at the popular landmark, Dolphin’s Nose. Its a cliff with railings on the edge for tourists. Seeing, the image, I smiled to myself. My husband caught me smiling and asked me the reason.
At that moment, not sure how he will take it, I decided to tell him the truth. I told him, when he was taking my picture that day, another guy behind him was smiling at me and gave me the thumbs up sign. I had smiled back at the guy.
I didn’t know how he will react. Will he be the jealous kind and get angry on me? Or will he forbid me from looking at another guy again? Or will he shout at me for not telling him that another guy was trying to hit on me?
But he just laughed it off. Till date, he teases me about it and we laugh about it every time we see the picture.
That day, I realised, that he will be a good friend. He will let me be the person I am and will accept me as I am. Even now, I know I can talk to him about anything under the sun and he will not judge me.
