Ours was an arranged marriage after a short engagement period of about 6 weeks.  In an era of no cellphones, Facebook, Whatsapp,  our communication was limited to a daily single phone call monitored by the parents.  Before, getting married, we met precisely two times.  My friends were aghast that I was marrying a complete stranger and going into this with my eyes closed.  But,  my inner self told me I was right.

Post one week of the wedding, not much accustomed to each other,  we went on our honeymoon to the Queen of Hills, Ooty.  .  We did all the popular things, visited famous landmarks and took lots of photographs on our Minolta camera.  Slowly, we started discovering new aspects of each other and life was beautiful.

Once back home, we got all our photos printed.  In those days,  we had to wait for a few days till the roll was developed to see how we did in the picture.  There was this one grainy picture of me alone smiling at the camera at the popular landmark, Dolphin’s Nose.  Its a cliff with railings on the edge for tourists.  Seeing, the image, I smiled to myself.  My husband caught me smiling and asked me the reason.

At that moment, not sure how he will take it,  I decided to tell him the truth.  I told him,  when he was taking my picture that day,  another guy behind him was smiling at me and gave me the thumbs up sign.  I had smiled back at the guy.

I didn’t know how he will react.  Will he be the jealous kind and get angry on me?  Or will he forbid me from looking at another guy again?  Or will he shout at me for not telling him that another guy was trying to hit on me?

But he just laughed it off.  Till date, he teases me about it and we laugh about it every time we see the picture.

That day, I realised,  that he will be a good friend.  He will let me be the person I am and will accept me as I am.  Even now,  I know I can talk to him about anything under the sun and he will not judge me.

How wonderful that your arranged marriage turned out well! 🙂 I must admit, this is a difficult concept for me to grasp.

For people from outside India, its a difficult concept. But in India, it is the norm. There are more love marriages, but again, many cultures still restrict it. Both have its pros and cons.

Lovely story and memory! What a wonderful thing to know your husband is also your friend. How could marriage be a success otherwise? Thank you for sharing, and happy Cherished Blogfest! Cinda

What a wonderful story! A colleague of mine had an arranged marriage also and she is very happy, or at least as happy as anyone can be. So often the person we fall in love with changes completely, and we have to learn to love them all over again.

Very true.. Whether you know the person or not, after marriage, changes are inevitable. But good to have the spouse on our side. Thanks for visiting.

Hey Shalz, in your posts, when you write you hardly knew your husband before the wedding, I think of mine. Guess we are in the same boat.

Ours was an arranged match too. Well, for the most part that is. 😀
We are lucky to have found such great friends in our spouses.
A relationship to cherish for a lifetime. 🙂

Its really good that the spouse is also the best friend. I cannot imagine life doing what I am supposed to do, instead of what I want to do. In your response, you mentioned ‘For the most part’? What does it mean?

It was arranged for the most part means that we came across each through the traditional matchmaking route. But then we were the ones who decided to proceed with the alliance when our folks had their doubts. We had to convince our folks that this is what we wanted etc etc. Lots of struggle, some drama. Not typical of an arranged match, right? 😛
